HOLIDAYMAKERS aiming to get away for the Easter break were caught up in travel chaos as accidents caused havoc on the roads.

Many drivers had to endure traffic jams on Thursday afternoon and into the evening because of a series of accidents on the M62.

Travellers were hit the hardest on the eastbound carriageway after a caravan overturned close to junction 25 at Clifton shortly after 1pm.

Two adults and two children were in the car towing the van and got to safety on the hard shoulder.

Traffic jams stretched back several miles from junction 28 back to Junction 23 at Outlane as two lanes of the motorway had to be shut as removal crews righted the damaged caravan.

Ten minutes later, three cars collided in the outside lane near Junction 27 at Birstall. None of the drivers were injured but queues built up past Junction 26 at Chain Bar.

Twenty minutes later, on the westbound carriageway at Ainley Top, Highways Agency officers had to shut lanes to clear debris caused by a VW Polo catching fire at 2.40pm at Junction 28.

The driver was unhurt and managed to steer on to the hard shoulder.

Fire crews shut one lane to help them tackle the blaze.

Roads around Brighouse became jammed as motorists tried to avoid the queues by exiting at the junctions before the incidents.
