A fitness revolution for new mums is taking Brighouse by storm.
Mums and their new bundles of joy are having fun at Buggy 4 Fitness classes. The brainchild of fitness instructor Sharon Porter of Illingworth, the classes are unique and aren’t just an exercise class, they also offer peer support and the chance to make friends with other new mums while keeping fit.
Sharon said: “Once a new baby comes along it’s not as easy to just pop out to the gym or go for a run; there’s child care to think about. So I decided to put together some fitness classes that allow mums to keep in shape and bring their babies along in their buggies too. It’s working really well and has become much more than a weekly fitness class; it’s a social event not just for the mums but for the babies too.”
Buggy 4 Fitness sessions focus on a wide variety of postnatal specific exercises included within cardio, resistance, core and pelvic floor work.
Mums of all fitness levels are welcome as they can work at their own level, increasing as the sessions to progress to get back to their pre-pregnancy shape. Sessions can be joined as early as six to 12 weeks after the birth.
Sharon said: “Many women want to focus on toning up ‘the stomach’ following childbirth but extra care should be taken before commencing abdominal exercises such as crunches due to the need to make sure the abdominal sheaths have ‘sewn’ back together by doing a Diastasis Recti Check, which I can check for them before we begin the session.”
The classes started at the Stray in Lightcliffe in April and are held every Wednesday between 10am and 11am. But since then there’s been a fantastic response and four new classes have now been added at Savile Park Moor, Halifax, Calder Holmes Park, Hebden Bridge, Mill Fold Recreation Park, Ripponden and Beechwood Park, Holmfield.
