Hair loss service needs volunteers

People in Calderdale and Kirklees are being asked to volunteer to help people facing hair loss as a result of cancer treatment.

Breast Cancer Care, the UK’s leading support charity for people affected by breast cancer, launched its innovative free HeadStrong service at Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in 2002 and are now looking for more people to become volunteers to allow the services to continue to provide valuable support.

Every year around 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK. For many people, losing their hair can be one of the most traumatic parts of cancer treatment as it can have a devastating effect on their confidence and body image.

Specially-trained volunteers are needed to help cancer survivors learn how to prepare for possible hair loss, tie headscarves and use hats and hairpieces to help reduce its impact. They also help cancer victims learn how to look after their hair and scalp before, during, and after treatment. To find out more contact Lisa Holland on 0114 2636 480. The closing date for applications is Monday, March 17.
