HEAD teacher at Brighouse High School for more than 20 years, Mr Graham Soles was joined by past and present colleagues, friends and family at a farewell celebration.
Mr Soles has left the school to take up a new appointment co-ordinating the National Leaders of Education programme and a celebration of his 40 years in teaching was held at the Cedar Court Hotel, Ainley Top.
More than 200 people were at the event when he was presented with a chess set by the deputy head at Brighouse High Frances Wardle. Mrs Liz Cresswell, who is now head teacher at the school, and deputy head Clint Gummery spoke of Mr Soles's commitment to the school and former colleague Pete Smith, who worked with Mr Soles in Scarborough, spoke about the early part of his career.
Former head at Brighouse High Mrs Barbara Thompson was also among the guests and she was presented with flowers. Former students Hannah Youssefbeygi and Sarah Eggleton and member of staff Miss Siobhan Heneghan sang solos which included personal messages for Mr Soles.
Originally from Normanton, Mr Soles started his teaching career at Giggleswick before moving to Scarborough.
He worked at the University of York and the Nuffield Foundation before becoming head of modern languages at Hipperholme Grammar School. When education was reorganised in the Brighouse area in 1985 he joined Brighouse High as deputy head and took over as head when Mrs Thompson retired.
Mr Soles, who lives at Shelf with his wife Doreen, said it had been a privilege to work in Brighouse.
"The success of the school is down to everyone who works here. I am also very proud the school is part of the wider Brighouse community," he said.
