The temperature is dropping, the Christmas lights are being switched on and panto season is about to begin.

The cast and creative team behind this year’s Halifax pantomime, ‘Dick Whittington’, are hard at work putting the finishing touches to the show which opens at the Victoria Theatre on December 14.

Imagine Theatre, the company behind the show, is promising a great story, lots of hilarious comedy slapstick, romance, adventure and plenty of song and dance routines.

Rob Marsden, who is again directing the pantomime, said: “I don’t think most people realise all the work that needs to take place before the show starts – in fact the show has been in preparation since before Beauty and the Beast finished last year!

“Rehearsals are the time when all the work that has taken place over the last yearcomes together.”

Calderdale’s favourite entertainer Neil Hurst returns for the fifth year to play Idle Jack.

He said: “I absolutely love everything about panto - even getting covered in slosh every night for three weeks.”

Neil has played many roles in musicals, plays and TV and one of his first professional roles was as Magaldi in ‘Evita’. After Christmas he will be leaving the panto magic behind to direct Halifax Amateurs’ production of ‘The Witches of Eastwick.’

‘Dick Whittington’ runs from December 14 to January 5. To book tickets contact 01422 351158.

l Audiences will be able to enter the zany world of Edward Lear at the Christmas show at Square Chapel arts centre, Halifax. Calderdale writer Andrew Pollard is behind the play ‘The Hunt for the Scroobious Pip’, based on Lear’s nonsense poetry, which is being staged from December 16 to 24.

He said: “I wanted to create a show for Christmas that was zany and fun and Lear’s work certainly gives plenty of scope for the imagination to run wild.”
