On Wednesday November 16, eight students in two teams, from KS3 and KS4 took part in the regional heat of the Royal Society of Chemistry competition ‘Top of the Bench’.

This is a National competition designed to encourage and reward high achievement in school Chemistry students. The event was held at Huddersfield University and eighteen teams were involved from the Calderdale and Kirklees areas.

The competition was close and involved questions ranging from famous Chemists, flame tests and health and safety to elements and the periodic table. After a hard contest the team consisting of Dom Clough (Year Y11) Catherine Rimmer and Isobel Hereford (Year 9) and Meghan Ward (Year 10) came fourth and just missed out by four points.

The team of Ella Fitt ( Year 11), Zubair Sharis and Chloe Brearley (Year 9) and Jade Gray (Year 10) came second, agonisingly losing by one point.
