Year 10 and 11 GCSE art pupils visited The Hepworth gallery in Wakefield.
After being greeted by the gallery staff, pupils were free to roam the upper floor and view the range of sculptures and paintings on display in the different rooms. Many took photos as well as creating small sketches to record the artwork. This resulted in inspiring the students visual investigations for future mock exams.
Later in the day we were fortunate enough to meet the creative practitioners of the gallery. Students were issued a range of words such as ‘ocean’; ‘rock formations’, ‘seeds’ and ‘horizon’. They were then asked to search Hepworth’s sculptures to find a piece which best represented their word after students were instructed to draw in a variety of ways. This was asked to challenge pupils and stretch their conceptions about observation.
