Councillors have approved a licence with conditions for a dance school to hold parties and sell alcohol at their studio.

Caspers, based at Unit 4 Upper Bonegate, Brighouse, was given approval for the licence by Calderdale Council’s Licensing sub committee

In their application, Caspers said they wanted the licence to hold birthday parties, family celebrations and prize-giving ceremonies.

At the meeting, Jan Booth speaking on behalf of Caspers, said they were not looking to open a drinking den or encourage under age drinking and alcohol consumption.

“We understand people don’t want change and their concerns and if we were living in those houses we would be here as well.

“We have always said we wanted to build a viable business for the community.”

She also added that they are tackling any public nuisance by introducing CCTV and security lighting.

Twelve neighbouring residents had objected to the late night application, raising concerns of littering with cans, bottles and takeaway cartons.

A further 11 people living nearby objected as it would cause public nuisance, loud music and there is a lack of sound proofing in place.

At the meeting a representative from the residents said: “As residents we are the people who have to live there. We think a dance club is a great idea and we have no objections to that and it would benefit the community.

“The problem we have is the other activities. People would be still be coming and going in the early hours of the morning. We don’t see why we have to put up with the disturbance.”

Caspers said they were in talks with the Councils environmental health department to tackle any issues surrounding noise coming from the building and would look at ways to reduce it.

The sub-committee granted the licence but altered the times originally applied for.

The venue can play recorded music and perform dances Sunday to Wednesday between 9am to 8pm, and up until 9.15pm Thursday to Saturday. The studio was also be allowed to supply alcohol Thursday to Saturday from midday to 8pm and opening hours will be until 8pm Sunday to Wednesday, and 9.15pm Thursday to Saturday.
