The heritage of Brighouse is being eroded away with thieves stealing Yorkshire Stone from numerous locations in the area.

PC Chris Madden told Rastrick ward forum that there has been a spate of incidents including at St Matthew’s Church and behind the shops on Crowtrees Lane, opposite Rastrick Independent School.

PC Madden said that residents may have seen people who look like legitimate workers with high visibility jackets.

However, he advised people to make a note of the vehicle registrations or call the police on 101 if they thought the workers were acting suspiciously.

A white van and a dark green car have been spotted in the area when the thefts took place.

In 2014 the “Once it’s gone, it’s gone” campaign was launched, asking people to report to Crimestoppers whenever they see the removal of stone or stone roofing tiles, even though it may look like perfectly legitimate activity, and help keep Yorkshire’s iconic landscape out of the hands of thieves.

Residents can contact Crimestoppers anonymously, if they prefer not to contact the police, by calling 0800 555111 or complete an online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
