Campaign to install 20mph outside schools

Brighouse Road Safety Committee is calling for 20mph zones to be installed around all local schools within the area.

Vice chair Pat Oates said: “The speed at which motorists are driving on the roads close to our schools is still far too high. This puts our young people in real danger when travelling both to and from school. I recently had the opportunity to take part in a project with local children whereby the police monitored the speed of vehicles travelling outside schools and I was truly shocked by some of the excessive speeds that were recorded by motorists.” Mrs Oates asked for the 20mph zones to be installed at all Brighouse schools during a Calderdale Council’s Cabinet meeting and has the support of Brighouse Councillor Scott Benton (Con).

Councillor Benton said: “Introducing 20mph zones outside local schools would significantly increase the safety of pupils. If we could introduce these zones outside all schools it would not only be easier to communicate these changes to the public, but would also save money on the administration costs of implementing these zones so I feel that this is the way forward.”

Members will be discussing it at their next meeting on August 5. Everyone is welcome to attend.
