A COMMUNITY has spoken of its shock after the death of 23-year-old Michelle Suttle.

The former Rastrick High School student died from multiple stab wounds in hospital in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

Her boyfriend, Gavin Lee Sartain, appeared at Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday charged with her murder.

Michelle’s family and friends filled the public gallery as Sartain, aged 31, appeared via video link from prison.

A plea and case management hearing was fixed for September 22 and a provisional five-day trial has been set for the week beginning October 24. Sartain, of Baker Street in Oakes, Huddersfield, has been remanded in custody.

This week neighbours and friends have paid tribute to Michelle who they described as a quiet lovely girl.

Kelly Gould said she used to work with Michelle at Decopac which has depots in Brighouse and Hipperholme.

“You could always have a laugh with her. She was a lovely person and really nice to get on with,” she said.

One of her close friends who grew up with her at Gargrave Close said Michelle was lovely.

“She never bothered anyone. She was very quiet and we were good friends,” said the 29-year-old.

Her husband added: “She always kept herself to herself and would do anything for anyone, very polite.”

Another neighbour, said she had known Michelle since she was five years old. “She was a lovely girl, polite, pleasant and very pretty. She never had a wrong word for anybody,” she said.

Rastrick High’s head teacher Helen Lennie said: “Michelle was a friendly and popular student who came from a loving and supportive family. She was always a pleasant, well mannered and quiet young lady and a joy to teach.

“Michelle was very well thought of by students and staff and we are all deeply saddened by the news of her untimely death. The school wishes to send their sincere condolences to her family and friends at this time.”

A woman who works at the shop in Highfield Road said a lot of people knew Michelle and she was well liked in the area. “Everyone has said how she was a lovely girl who was down to earth. Most people have just been devastated by the news.”

Police were called to Sartain’s address at 12.50am, where they found her seriously injured.

An inquest into Michelle’s death was opened yesterday.
