It will be a close shave for Brighouse’s Shantel Tankard.
Shantel, an assistant practioner for Yorkshire Ambulance Service based at the station in Brighouse, is shaving her head in a bid to raise funds for Overgate Hospice, Elland, in memory of her mum Cheryl. She died in January 2011 after being diagnosed with cancer only 12 days prior.
“They were fantastic at Overgate,” said Shantel. “We couldn’t have asked for better care for her and a couple of months ago I took a patient to Overgate and they were going into the same room where my mum passed away. They remembered me and were so thoughtful and caring and I just thought I have to do something for them.”
Shantel will be having her head shaved on May 31 at Hove Edge Bowling Club by her hairdressers at Cole Hairdressing.
“If Jessie J can do it why can’t I,” she said. “I am starting to get a bit nervous. I have had long hair all my life so it will be a change to have short.”
Her target was £500 but Shantel who lives in Well Green Lane, Hove Edge, has already exceeded that.
“Everyone is welcome to attend on the night and we will be raising a glass for people that have lost a loved one,” she said.
“If it wasn’t for Overgate a lot of people would be stuck and because it is all run through charity it is fantastic and the staff are brilliant.”
Shantel said she was worried about how work would react to her having her head shaved. “They have been fantastic about me having my head shaved and are supporting me,” she said.

Her friend Michelle is also planning on climbing Machu Pichu in October to raise money for the hospice.
