Climbers in pole position in bouldering contests

Two youngsters are scaling new heights in an array of competitions.

Nathan Phillips and Luke Murphy are both competitors representing the Junior British Bouldering Team and practise at Rokt climbing gym in Mill Royd Street, Brighouse.

Nathan, 18, is the British Bouldering Junior Champion of 2012, Youth Climbing Series Champion and is tenth world ranking junior 2012. He is one of the most experienced athletes in the squad and was logical choice as team captain.

Nathan said he has travelled all over Europe to compete. “The junior team only really started this year and I used to compete with the seniors although they did a youth competition,” he said. “Rokt is a really big influence and a good training facility.”

The youngster from Honley said he was proud of his achievements.

Luke, 15, has only taken part in two of three competitions for the title of British Bouldering Junior Champion of 2013. Luke who lives in Hebden Bridge has competed in Liverpool and Scotland and in the next couple of months in Leeds. “At the moment Nathan is in pole position,” he said. “It is just nice being able to do something and be good at it. Rokt is a great place to practise and it has a good atmosphere.”

It will be the last year Nathan can compete in the junior category but he encouraged people to take up climbing of some form. “It is just different to all other sports,” he said.
