RESIDENTS and businesses hope a new housing and shopping development in Hipperholme will be a boon to the area..

Brighouse based Stercap Properties are building six shop units and 10 duplex apartments between Leeds Road and Wakefield Road. Businesses and residents say that the development may bring some concerns, such as traffic and parking, but they hope the build adds to the village.

Chloe Darwin, 39, of John Street, said: “If the new shops are looking to take on staff then it could benefit the local people and be an ideal place for single mums looking for part time work.”

Brian Tyson, from Lightcliffe, said: “It was a scrappy piece of land and credit to the developer for investing in it. People may do more shopping in the village rather than go to Halifax or other centres.

Nearby businesses also said they hope it could have a positive impact and increase footfall.

Local entrepreneur Colin Wormald, owner of Stercap Properties Ltd, said he believed the developm, ent would benefit the village. There are bolund to be mixed views but I believe it will be good for Hipperholme.

“The development is going really well,” he said. “We have managed to get back on schedule with after the spell of bad weather.

“There has been lot of interest in the flats and for the shops where we are still in discussions with a range of retailers.”
