Brighouse-based Avocet Hardware demonstrated the extent of the lock-snapping problem at this year’s Neighboured and Home Watch Network (NHWN) Awards.

Raymond Pearce, Avocet Hardware’s head of UK sales, talking to chief inspectors, Home Office policy advisors, police amd crime commissioners at Westminster, said: “The lock-snapping problem is well-documented, but what isn’t is the fact that many of the supposedly snap-secure solutions on the market provide little or no protection.”

Lock-snapping is a form of forced entry that many police forces say accounts for over half of all break-ins in the UK. It takes advantage of a design flaw in the Euro cylinder lock that is fitted as standard in millions of UK homes.

Avocet Hardware was recently announced as NHWN’s primary sponsor for security products for 2014/2015 – a partnership aimed at helping secure local communities through a process of education, promotion and incentivisation.

“One of the key aims for this sponsorship period is to ensure that the British public is given the full story, and with it the knowledge they need to protect their home against lock-snapping attack.”
