John Scott, an organist of international fame, is currently director of music at New York’s principal Anglican Church - St Thomas’ Church on Fifth Avenue.
He is returning to his native Yorkshire this summer to give the opening recital of an extensive European tour. St Martin’s Church in Brighouse is the venue for this recital on July 11.
The varied programme will offer contrasting pieces to suit all tastes, played on the church’s grand organ and chamber organ.
John Scott was born in 1956 in Wakefield and became a cathedral chorister. While still at school he gained the diplomas of the Royal College of Organists, winning the major prizes.
In 1974 he became organ scholar of St John’s College, Cambridge. After leaving Cambridge he was appointed to the principal position of Organist and Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral.
In the summer of 2004, after a 26 year association with St Paul’s Cathedral, he took up the post of Organist and Director of Music at the St Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York.
He was awarded the LVO in the New Year’s Honours List of 2004, a personal gift from HM Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his work at St Paul’s Cathedral.
The Brighouse Parish Church recital starts at 7.30pm and will be introduced by Jonathan Bielby, director of music at Wakefield Cathedral from 1979 to 2010.
Tickets are £9 (£7 concessions) and may be purchased from church members, by phone 01484 715238 or at the door on the night. The price of the ticket includes a buffet supper with wine and soft drinks.
