A SMOOTH con man who charms, befriends and then steals from his victims is being sought by police.

They are appealing for information about the identity of the mystery man who they want to question in connection with a growing number of thefts and burglaries in Brighouse town centre.

The crimes have taken place at several churches, local authority buildings and businesses where a man has been seen befriending people.

Items such as cash from charity boxes and purses have been reported missing. The same description of the man keeps emerging from police inquiries.

Cash has been stolen from properties in Martin Street and Church Lane. Charity boxes and purses are the usual targets. Officers from the Lower Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team are keen to speak to the man.

He is described as being white, aged in his 40s and around 5ft 8ins to 6ft tall.

He is stockily built with short cropped hair, is well dressed and on occasions wears a hat and either dark or silver rimmed spectacless.

Sergeant Dean Maddocks, who leads the Lower Valley team, said: “Any building such as a church is part of the local community and when incidents of this nature occur it affects each and every member of that community.

“Neighbourhood policing team officers are working hard to gather intelligence and raise full awareness of the issue.

“I would appeal to members of the local community in Brighouse to provide any information that they believe will help us with our investigation.”

Anyone with any information about the identity of the man or any of the thefts should call Sgt Maddocks on 01484 405251.
