There was a time when certain streets were known and often referred to by the shops in the street. Let us take Halifax for example I was walking through the town centre recently heading for shoe shop street. Some readers will know where that is but to younger readers it is Crown Street.
Why? Because there was a time when almost all of the shops in that street were shoe shops.
In Brighouse you had only to mention Kay’s and instantly you knew it was Bethel Street or Ozzy Wain’s which everyone knew was O.S.Wain’s men’s outfitters and instinctively everyone knew you meant Bradford Road.
In these two photographs we have Co-op Street which is actually King Street but it was dominated by one store for more years that most can remember.
Brighouse Co-op was an institution and even now people will still refer to it when giving out directions.
Those that use it of a certain age will still call it the Co-op car park on the end of King Street.
