Brighouse Flour and Industrial Society

With the Co-op being in the news in recent months for all the wrong reasons it is worth reminding ourselves about our own very successful Brighouse Flour and Industrial Society to give its full and original title.

A name that was changed c1862 to Brighouse District Industrial Society but to you and me that grew up with this business it was simply known as the Co-op.

No prizes but can you remember your Co-op Dividend, better known as the Co-op Divi, number?

Ours was 14910 and woe betide if you forgot to give the number in when you went for your mum’s shopping.

The Co-op movement in Brighouse started in 1856 and this photograph shows King Street the home of Brighouse Co-op a century later decorated celebrating a wonderful milestone.
