St Joseph's RC Primary School, Todmorden was revealed as the top performing school in the borough in the key stage two league tables, published by the Department for Education.

Overall, 93 per cent of pupils at the school achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths.

Elizabeth Lloyd, head teacher of the school, which has now converted to an academy within the Romero Catholic Academy Trust, said: “The results these children have achieved is testament to their commitment and hard work.

“We have ensured the children have balanced, highly focused lessons with many wider experiences to achieve these standards.

“We meet the children at their starting points and work together to achieve the highest possible standards.

“Not only have the children surpassed the targets set for the school, they have also had an incredible year filled with memories for a lifetime, with trips including the Houses of Parliament, London; Bridgewater Hall, Manchester; Rose Theatre, York; Royal Armouries, Leeds and a residential weekend in Carnforth.

“The team of staff at the school, in collaboration with the parents, have all been vital in contributing to this rapid improvement. The school is now hoping to build on this, producing standards and memories in equal measure for the year groups that are to follow.”

Calderdale is ranked as the top performing local authority in West Yorkshire, with 65 per cent of pupils achieving the expected standard, a three per cent rise from last year.
