LIGHTCLIFFE schoolgirl Phoebe Newman will be stepping into ‘The Secret Garden’ this Christmas.
Ten-year-old Phoebe, a pupil at Cliffe Hill Primary School, has been chosen to be a member of the chorus for the spectacular seasonal show at Square Chapel arts centre, Halifax.
The adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s children’s classic is being staged from December 17 to December 29 with two shows on most days. The cast includes a mixture of professional actors from Proper Job Theatre Company and talented youngsters from Calderdale.
It is the first time Phoebe has appeared with Proper Job and she is really enjoying the experience.
“I’ve been in plays at school but nowhere else. It’s all been brilliant but the best bit so far was when we started learning the songs.”
Phoebe is looking forward to seeing her family in the audience. “I think my family will be happy and surprised to see me on a proper stage.”
But she doesn’t have any long-term ambitions to take up acting. “I want to be a paleontologist and find out about dinosaurs and their bones.”
‘The Secret Garden’ tells the enchanting story of Mary Lennox who, after her parents’ death, moves to live with her uncle in a dark and imposing manor on the Yorkshire moors.
She is spoilt, stuck-up and sullen - but her attitude is about to change for the better.
Proper Job’s previous Christmas hits include ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, ‘Scrooge’ and ‘Pinocchio’.
The show is suitable for families and children aged over five. For ticket information contact 01422 349422.
