A charity music festival is returning for a fifth year on the same weekend that one of the world’s largest sporting spectacles hits Calderdale.

Ramfest 5 will be held at Southowram Cricket Club on the weekend of July 6 as the Tour de France comes through the area.

Sean Liquorish, one of the organisers, said that two charities have already been chosen this year and it is hoped to match last year’s total.

“This year we are supporting two fantastic cancer charities who look after our young people.

“Both are based in the region and looking after the Calderdale Youth in West Yorkshire hospitals.

“The first is Candlelighters which was founded by, and is still run by, parents of children who have or have had cancer and the medical staff who treat them, understanding the trauma and the turmoil of that diagnosis and offering support and care needed.

“The second charity is the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust, which is the only UK charity funding medical research specifically into cancer affecting teenagers and young adults, where it can frequently strike in dangerous and complex forms.

“The Trust also funds measures to improve the quality of life for young cancer patients, both during and in the aftermath of their illnesses.

“Last year we raised £,4000 for Help for Heroes and Motor Neurone Disease Association and we hope to raise at least that much again this year.”

Talks are ongoing with Calderdale Council and the cricket club to stage Ramfest across the whole weekend with a campsite being created for spectators.

There will also be family entertainment throughout the day on Saturday with an outside bar and barbeque on the Saturday along with face painting and a bouncy castle for children.

Music will be held between 1pm and 9pm with three new bands appearing and old favourites returning.

This year’s line up includes Oblivion, Three and a Half Men, While the Cats Away, My Brother Jake, International Party Doctors, Fork Handles and Rox Off.

If the proposals go ahead, spectators from Ramfest will be able to experience the Tour as it arrives on Sunday only three miles away as it passes through West Vale or find another location as it passes through Calderdale.
