IT was of déjà vu for Thornhill Briggs as for a second successive weekend player-manager Anthony Todd came off the bench to score and help secure his side maximum Ziggy A Star’s Cars Halifax Sunday League points.
As against Ryburn United, Briggs found themselves a goal down, against comparative strugglers Stubbing Wharf at Savile Park.
They showed great character to fight back however with Glen Hall and Todd netting to record another close run 2-1 victory.
The points were vital as the Brighouse side continue to cling to the coat tails of Division Two leaders Lee Mount and they got a further fillip as Elland Reserves held the side at the helm to a 5-5 draw. The results leave Briggs just one point behind Mount, although the Halifax side have a game in hand.
Also in Division Two, Triangle proved last weekend’s reversal against Stallions was just a blip in their recent form as they defeated bottom side Halifax Rangers Reserves.
Alex Brown continued his outstanding goalscoring form with a hattrick, while Stephen Biggs and Ben Brown also scored in a 5-0 win.
‘Angle have won three of their last four outings, conceding only three goals as they look set to climb the table with games in hand.
In Division One, both Sun Inn and Old Pond were defeated as they failed to add points to help lead them away from the relegation zone.
Pond made a lively start against Hollins Holme, but were ultimately undone by an excellent second half from the visitors.
Ryan Turton struck a warning shot at the Hollins goal as the Hove Edge side dominated early proceedings and they took a deserved lead. Centre half Dan Reddy pumped a ball into the visitors’ penalty area from his own half and Steven Butterworth in the Hollins goal allowed it to slip through his legs into the net.
Chris Payne made an excellent run to create a chance to double Pond’s lead but having rounded Butterworth could not apply the finish. At the other end Hollins restored parity before the interval. A route one delivery found Simon Newbitt in the clear to level at half-time.
In the second half the visitors dominated possession. Tom Booth finished from a left wing cross before Newbitt lobbed Ben Briggs to make it 3-1.
Briggs made a number of saves to keep Pond in it and the Brighouse side should have had a penalty at the other end. Dom Bradley was brought down but the referee awarded a free kick outside the box which came to nothing.
Sun Inn played another side in the relegation dogfight in Greystones Social Club and found themselves just short in a nine-goal thriller.
Adrian Kelly, Ben Timson, Aaron Brook and Wayne Collins were all on the scoresheet for the Rastrickians, but a 5-4 defeat gives Greystones the chance to go above both Pond and Sun if they win their two games in hand.
