SEEMINGLY anointed champions Knaresborough came to Brighouse only needing a draw.
Having beaten the Old Boys in the two previous fixtures -league and cup - they were confident of gaining the required point.
The championship trophy was there to present to Knaresborough but the game plan, to spoil the party worked.
The Old Boys took the game to Knaresborough in the first 20 minutes and with Dan Addy raiding down the left and Wayne Cummings on the right, chances started to come.
In the first 10 minutes leading scorer Paul Taylor was unlucky not to score when an angled shot hit the bar and post.
The Old Boys opened the scoring when a cross from Cummings was met by Addy and the Knaresborough keeper. The ball came loose and Addy turned and smashed it home.
Knaresborough started to put pressure on the home defence and central defenders Vaughan Wagstaff and Lee Williams needed to concentrate. Old Boys weathered the storm for the rest of the first half.
The second half followed a similar pattern but Knaresborough were mainly restricted to long range efforts.
When they broke through they could not get past the excellent handling of Gareth Betts in the Brighouse goal.
They also found it difficult to cope with the pace and acumen of Mike Pearson up front and the attacking play of Taylor.
He came close with a couple of efforts, one a pinpoint freekick which was just tipped over the bar by the Knaresborough keeper and the other when he dribbled round the keeper but the angle was too tight to score.
Taylor also had a good call for a penalty turned down.
At the other end, another claim for a penalty was turned down and a Knaresborough goal was justifiably ruled out for being offside.
With two minutes to go the Old Boys had a golden opportunity to extend their lead but Pearson just failed to chip the ball over the keeper’s head.
The game ended in a deserved victory for the home team, the league trophy went back to the cabinet and Brighouse Old Boys were heartened by the all round positive performance and will to win attitude they displayed.
