AFTER a weekend of enjoying the Championship play-off matches and a cracking fifth round RL Challenge Cup tie at Huddersfield, the result that really floated my boat was hearing FC Halifax Town had got back into the Conference.
With the 1-0 win down at Brackley they now join another former Football League club in Chester City in the division below League 2.
Brought up watching Halifax Town and Halifax RLFC I will always have a soft spot for them and in the 1997-98 season I went everywhere to watch the Shaymen led by manager George Mulhall get back into the Football League.
Only for a decision at board level to upset the applecart and lose the great man Mulhall and his assistant Keiron O’Regan. Downhill once more from thereon in and now some 15 years later I just hope we are on the threshold of seeing the club build to get back up into the Football League.
The Huddersfield Giants v Leeds Rhinos cup tie was a cracker and at a time when it needs it, a great national advertisement for the 13-a-side game, some two million watching on BBC ahead of the FA Cup Final that was on ITV.
Virtually straight after the game I was off with my friend Calvin Oates from Brookfoot to Headingley for a dinner and the MC opened with:”Welcome to Leeds Rhinos end of season dinner”!
It was really weird to arrive and witness another summer sport-RL is that these days despite the weather-as Yorkshire CCC were about to be thrashed by Somerset in a Sky televised 40 overs game. With the Leeds cup tie on TV and the FA Cup final on-going at the time there were no more than 500 in the Headingley ground.
