Lightcliffe Cricket Club members packed into the Sun Inn public house in the village last week for their annual general meeting.

Over 30 players, officials and members heard an upbeat message from chairman Steve Hartley who said: “There is much to look forward to on and off the pitch in 2014”.

He looked back on a successful season which saw the first team lift the Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup, 43 years on since the trophy last came to Wakefield Road.

Highlights also included a ‘double’ for the thirds and a successful women’s team campaign under the leadership of Angela Monaghan. He added that there are now more junior teams than ever which augurs well for a brighter future.

Club secretary Nigel Broadbent gave a summary of team and individual highs and said how much he had enjoyed his first year in the job.

Club Treasurer Richard Thompson ran through the accounts, and there was a special presentation to retiring auditor John Radcliffe. Radcliffe had served the club in many different roles over the years.

Off the field there were many social and fundraising events and there are even more planned for this year. These kick off with a quiz night at Coley Community Hall on Saturday, March 1 (7.30pm start), followed by the spring dinner at Crow Nest Golf club on March 29.

Bob Horne will be organising another summer music event at the club.

A range of talented musicians will gather on May 31 while to complete the packed agenda of events, the club’s annual gala will be on Sunday June, 22.

There are a couple of changes in personnel this campaign, with Moody Rasool and Dave Hester moving on and big hearted spinner Chris Greenwood returning after a year’s sabbatical at Barkisland.

“He has the stomach for the fight,” said first team skipper Chris Taylor.

“ It is also terrific news that James Horneis back.

“He will play a key role with the bat and ball.”

The twos will once again be led by Michael Brooke, Bruce Lunn takes charge of the thirds, while the women’s team are once again captained by Anglea Monaghan.

There will be a pre season friendly at Wakefield Road on April 12, with the real action beginning on April 19.
