League chalks up for another season of cueing action

The 2015-16 Brighouse and District Snooker League gets underway next Wednesday and Thursday, September 2 and 3, at 7.30pm.

The league does so with a significant reduction in teams, which while worrying the league organisers, does not fill them with any unnecessary uncertainty over the future of the league.

This year it will be commencing without a sponsor as secretary and fixture
secretary Ellis Aked said he had not had dialogue or confirmation from the sponsors for the past three seasons, Keighley-based ABV Licensed Wholesalers.

“It is nice to have the backing of a company but we will stride into the season unabashed by it and are open to other companies coming forward when they read this,” said Ellis.

Ellis also reported that for the first time since the 1979-80 season there will be just four sections playing over the two nights, with only one section on a Wednesday night.

“We have also lost teams from Brighouse Sports Club, Cliffe Hall, Rastrick
Cricket Club and Thornhill Briggs.

“The Cliffe Hall loss sees that team heading back to their former home of Blakeborough’s Club which on the sporting front has re-opened on Monday evenings ready for the Brighouse and District Games League and Wednesdays and Thursdays for snooker.

“It is also the first time in my long association with the snooker league to witness only seven teams at my own club, Thornhill Briggs WMC, when we have had eight for some considerable time.

“The Thursday section is also losing one team from Lightcliffe Club.

“It’s not all bad news as we have gained one new team from Rastrick Constitutional Club (Top Club).”

The sections are as follows: A Section 15 teams, B Section 14 teams, C Section 15 teams and D Section 16 teams.

All team secretaries are asked to get their result cards in straight after a game so
results can be published weekly in Echo Sport along with League tables once a month.
