There will be no repeat of Lightcliffe’s 2013 Priestley Cup triumph.

The Wakefield Road outfit lost by 19 runs in this season’s first round of the Bradford League competition to the side they beat in last year’s final, Hanging Heaton.

Jonathan Wilson was in charge in the absence of Chris Taylor and he led from the front with his side’s top score on 55.

However, it was not enough as a heaton side packed with ex-Wrenthorpe players went through.

Ex-Yorkshire player Ismail Dawood made 50 and he, David Stiff (37) and Illingworth product Gary Fellows (28) helped the hosts to 214.

Lightcliffe’s reply started solidly but slowly and they had three of their top six stumped as they tried to quicken the scoring rate, including Wilson.

Alex Stead made 38 but Lightcliffe finished on 195 for six.

Brighouse had a mountain to climb away to champions Cleckheaton but Johannes Van Ee ensured they were not disgraced in defeat.

Van Ee top scored with 61 to help Brighouse to 130 after they had been 18 for five and 40 for seven and he received support from Rafiq Mohammed.

Van Ee followed up with three for 48 but Zafar Jadoon took the only other wicket as Richard Whitehurst (47 no) saw Cleckheaton comfortably through.

Elland bowed out of the Huddersfield League’s Sykes Cup in a high-scoring game at Kirkburton but Barkisland progressed with a home win over Meltham.

The Hullen Edge men looked to be sitting pretty when Kirkburton were 19 for three in reply to their impressive 288 for eight, which included 117 from in-form new signing Fahid Rehman.

However, Ibrar Latif has started the season like a house on fire and he hit an unbeaten 137 to see Kirkburton to a four-wickey win, aided by Tom Birkenshaw (40 no).

Three wickets each for LJ Brown and Alex Scholefield restricted Meltham to 160 and Barkisland survived the loss of three early blows to win by five wickets.

Alex Kaye made 69 at the top of the order and Seth Oddy (40) and skipper Darren Robinson (32 no) helped settle matters.

Todmorden were no match for Rawtenstall, who won by 58 runs at Centre Vale on Sunday to move five points clear at the top of the Lancashire League.

Tod could only manage 161 for nine in reply to the visitors’ 219 for eight with the home side’s run chase hampered by a duck for pro Michael Neser, after he had taken three for 66.

Northowram Fields made it back-to-back wins in the Central Yorkshire League’s Championship after opening bowler Zafar Khan (six for 26) ripped through visitors East Leeds for 69.

The Rams wrapped up a four-wicket win with 30 from Dru Patel.
