Brighouse CC produced the shock of the day in Division Two of the Bradford League when they defeated second-placed New Farnley by eight runs in a tense encounter.
Brighouse looked to be in trouble at 41 for four but Sohail Hussain plundered 10 fours in a vital knock of 55 while skipper Umar Salim made a fighting 43 as their side posted a score of 180.
Nadeem Hussain (four for 24) and Nick Walker (three for 42) were the pick of the New Farnley bowlers.
New Farnley never found any kind of rhythm and wickets fell regularly. Hussain (45) and Lee Goddard (34) tried to inject some purpose into the innings but Brighouse maintained their stranglehold with Zafar Jadoon taking four for 41.
In a very tense finish Brighouse held their nerve as the visitors ran out of overs and reached 172 for nine to give Brighouse a very welcome 17 points which lifted them into 11th.
This Saturday they entertain Hartshead Moor who are one place above them.
Brighouse Seconds put in another great performance at Spen Victoria and were unlucky to come away with a five wicket defeat in another close finish.
Batting first they posted a score of 188 for nine off their 50 overs. In form Jason Horsley was again the pick of the batting, reaching his half century in only 38 balls.
His total of 57 included nine fours before he was stumped by Tom Loker. Mohammed Daud also reached his half century with 51 before he was trapped lbw.
Dave Maloney opened the bowling in fine style, claiming opener Oliver Webster lbw for a duck and then bowling number three Oliver Davison.
With the hosts on six for two things looked good, but an unbeaten 93 from Andrew Filipowicz took Spen near to their target.
Kamran Khan took three more wickets for 35 runs as Brighouse fought to the end but Spen just managed to reach their target in the penultimate over.
This Saturday Brighouse second string are away to Pudsey Congs.
