THE second ‘Major’ of the 2011/12 season at Castlefields Golf Club was the Jackson Four, which is used as the qualifier for the Halifax, Huddersfield & District Union of Golf Club’s Fourball Betterball Competition.
The Jackson Four is a pairs competition, with players choosing their own partners, in a fourball betterball format event.
The continued good weather and strong winds meant the course presented a challenge with the greens being particularly quick.
Fifteen pairs competed in the event and in the conditions scoring was not as low as might be expected for a fourball betterball event with the majority of scores being around par.
However, two pairings enjoyed the conditions and Fred Leek and John Lynch combined to return a Nett 47, but the winners were Simon Bottomley and Alex Bottomley who returned a level par Gross 54 for a Nett 44 and three shot winning margin.
Some consolation for Leek and Lynch was that they were the sole winners of the day’s Twos Club when both chipped in for 2’s at the fourth hole. Best Gross was returned by Richard Squire and Nik Kelly with 58.
The club had a good turnout for its Easter Medal competition with 15 players returning nett par scores or better.
In Division One Shaun Harris pipped Alex Bottomley on a back nine countback to win with a nett 48.
Division Two had a clear winner with Barry Goldspink returning a nett 43 with Bob Evers runner-up with a nett 47.
Best gross for the event was Matthew Spink 57.
Brian Goldspink, Keith Goldspink and Matthew Riach shared the Twos Club.
