Whitehall just edged out in battle of the Pennine high flyers
Whitehall started strongly against old foes and Division Four leaders, Undercliffe.
Mark Bolger and Nat Greenwood were putting in the big drives and Dom Guiry, David Spivey and captain Alex Scargill were working the set pieces.
After 10 minutes Scargill stole the ball and Guiry forced his way over from acting halfback. Holroyd converted for a 6–0 lead.
The Wild Boars stormed back with their big forwards hammering the Whitehall defence and Liam and Gavin Jarvis throwing the ball wide down the right hand side of the pitch.
The Warriors repelled this onslaught with John Handscomb and John Sagar saving their line with superb tackles.
Undercliffe ensured the stalemate with an equally good defence which snuffed out the danger of stand in coach rampaging Pete Williams.
Big Nat Greenwood was proving a handful to tackle with his powerful bursts and Willy Woodhead felt the full force of his impact and had to retire from the match.
The constant pressure to the right flank finally paid off for Undercliffe as Kaz Ahmed forced his way over on the stroke of half time. Aidan Scully booted the difficult conversion to make the match all square after 40 minutes.
There was a mix up in defence from Whitehall and Ryan Dean made them pay as he strolled over the line. Scully converted to give Undercliffe the lead for the first time.
Whitehall, annoyed at their mistake, came back with a vengeance. Ryan Brook, Joe Fee and Dan Kelly hammered the Undercliffe line. Bolger was held short, then Greenwood, but Spivey was one too many and powered over. Holroyd surprisingly missed the goal kick but the Warriors were firing on all cylinders.
Whitehall were camped once again on the Wild Boar line but Undercliffe held strong.
A fiasco with the substitutions left an opening for Ash Yarrow to split the Warriors line and go the full length of the pitch for a try under the sticks. Scully kicked the easy conversion and Undercliffe extended the lead to 18-10.
Whitehall looked deflated and Undercliffe surged forward. A nice dummy from Scully split the defence and Kaz Ahmed was on hand to go over on the right flank. An excellent conversion from Scully followed and the Warriors looked dead and buried at 24-10.
Whitehall upped their game and battled back. Josh McLean and Luke Sagar took the ball upfield and Handscomb booted a bomb. Mark Bolger grounded the ball in the melee and, with Holroyd’s goal kick, there was still a chance for the Warriors.
The elusive John Handscomb couldn’t be touched as he danced around defenders to score under the posts. Holroyd converted and at 24-22 the Wild Boars were on the rack. Time was against Whitehall and Undercliffe were relieved to hear the final whistle.
