TV's new darts star heads back to work
JOINER Scott Waites was back at work on Tuesday, £50,000 richer and now a familiar face to thousands of TV darts fans.
The 32-year-old, who works at Pennine Housing's Woodvale, Brighouse, base reached the to the final of the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
The Bradfordian, who lives at Outlane with fiancee Sally, eventually lost 16-2 to 14-times world champion Phil `The Power' Taylor in front of a capacity crowd and the ITV 4 cameras.
Taylor followed up his 16-6 defeat of Raymond van Barneveld in the afternoon's semis with another brilliant display to take the 100,000 winner's cheque – his 21st tournament victory of 2009.
Although an easy winner, PDC member Taylor was full of praise for BDC registered Yorkshire County and England player Waites.
"I'm so proud of Scott. He came through a really tough field this week, and he never gave in," he said.
Speaking on Wednesday morning while working on a house in Southowram, Waites told Echo Sport: "The guy is unbeatable, but I was just pleased to have made the final after six high concentration games over the seven days at Wolverhampton.
"I was just happy to have made it out of the group stages and into the last 16 to beat Kerry Anderson, then Simon Whitlock in the quarter-finals before beating Terry Jenkins in my semi-final.
"The bookies had me at 40-1 without Taylor and my dad is now kicking himself he didn't have a tenner on me."
An employee of Pennine Housing for 10 years, Scott has played his darts locally in the Brighouse Tuesday Evening League with Low Moor WMC, the Bramwell House up Thornton Road, Bradford, The Forresters at Crosland Moor and the Walkers Arms, Golcar.
He has been a member of the Yorkshire County side for six seasons and is also a member of the England team whose home base is the Bridlington Spa Theatre.
