Town are hoping to do the business.... while local boxing club chief looks to bring Mike Tyson to Clifton
FUND raising and grant aid in any sport at any level, is essential and before I just highlight Brighouse Town's Business Club, I have to tell you about an amusing tale FC Halifax Town fan Peter Owen told me.
The Brighouse Sports Club member was at the turnstiles at Prescot Cables on Merseyside a couple of weeks ago for a UniBond Division One North game and was asked to purchase a half time draw ticket.
He did just that and when the numbers came over the PA system at half time he turned to his brother Glyn, vice-captain of Crow Nest Park Golf Club, and said: "I have second prize."
He went to the club's offices after the game to claim it and was told to go and see Norman at the bar. He did just that and received a bottle of red wine.
"Is that all for my quid,?" Peter asked, and Norman replied: "I am afraid so, but you have done better than the winner, he received a bottle of Albanian whisky!"
Brighouse Town, in order to help them bring in some steady and much needed cash, have launched a Business Club which can also be signed up for by individuals or consortiums.
So far after their launch last month they have around a dozen members paying 42 a month for some attractive prizes and the opportunity to be pitchside/stadium advertisers and match day sponsors and enjoy what is first class hospitality these days at their Hove Edge ground.
If you feel your firm could help them in this way, or you and your mates could down at your local or workingmen's club then please make contact with chairman Chris Lister on 07770 392592.
They need all the financial support they can get to make progress up the non-league ladder and they are certainly making a good job of it this season.
MIKE Tyson made Rawthorpe ABC chief Mark Reynolds' day when he presented him with a replica WBA belt in recognition for his bodyguard work during his recent tour of this country.
Reynolds and he became firm friends as the Huddersfield boxing coach drove 2,900 miles in nine days to ensure all his luggage and many other things made it to the respective destinations. He had, after all, brought across his wife, a 10-month-old baby, his mother-in-law and his best pal Darrell.
He went to one event in Brighton where 40 people paid 1,000 each to have dinner with Tyson. A replica title belt that the former boxer signed went for 10,000.
The former world heavyweight champion who has courted controversy was, according to Mark, as good as gold and talked many nights into the early hours in his suites about his life from the age of 12 until now.
A dinner in Essex cost 250-a- head and there was plenty of other entertainment besides. They were mobbed in Meadowhall, Sheffield, when just looking at the shops and making purchases but our Mark and his colleagues were up to their jobs.
There is talk of another tour and Mark is asking the promoters to look at bringing him to his hometown. I have already tipped off the Leeds-Brighouse Holiday Inn, at Clifton which would be delighted to host an evening with Mike Tyson.
