Rangers control tough cup tie
Rugby league - Brighouse Rangers v Wibsey Gavin Midgley for Brighouse
BRIGHOUSE advanced into the quarter finals of the league cup with a hard fought victory over local rivals Odsal.
The conditions were atrocious with many spectators sheltering under the trees.
Brighouse won the toss and decided to take advantage of the slope and play down the hill.
It did not take long for Rangers to notch the first try when wingman Andy Collins scored out wide. Gary Procter missed the conversion.
Odsal pushed Rangers hard and made plenty of yards up the park but lacked a little in attack to cause them any real trouble.
Prop forward Lee Buckley scored the next Rangers try, with Proctor converting.
The returning Neil Walton was the next over the line and when Gavin Midgley finished off a break by Scott Bradley, Rangers had chalked up an 18 - 0 lead at half-time.
The second half saw Rangers having to play up the hill and coach Alex Muff stressed the importance of ball retention and completion of sets.
With the conditions deteriorating the game was a stop-start affair.
A bad facial injury to stand-off Gary Proctor galvanised Rangers. Walton completed a double but missed his own conversion.
On the stroke of full time Andy Sagars crossed when he was put in by the impressive Buckley and Muff converted.
Best for Rangers were Sagars, Buckley and Muff.
Andy Collins won the meat raffle, who is ironically part of the Collins Butchers of Cleckheaton family.
