Rangers aim for repeat success

PENNINE ARL Division Two League leaders Brighouse Rangers are back at Odsal Sedbergh (2pm) for the second week running but in league action after last week’s cup success.

In appalling conditions they beat Odsal in their own backyard, 28 - 0 and player-coach Alex Muff is confident of picking up another two points in their promotion push.

“We have the ability in our squad to beat anyone on the day and as long as we don’t show complacency we should remain league leaders with a win,” said Muff.

“Odsal will, on recent performances put up a better performance than last week, albeit the wind and rain was a factor and we adapted the better to come out on top.”

With Jamie Barraclough as best man at his dad’s wedding and Stuart Proctor and Ross Young to have fitness tests, assistant coach Craig Young said they were looking to have to switch positions around.

Rangers seconds are at home to St Joseph’s A on Saturday (2pm).

After back-to-back wins in cup games, coach Phil Barsby wants his side to start climbing the league table.

Both Rangers and St Joseph’s are battling at the bottom of Division Five, as both have been struggling with numbers. But in recent weeks both sides’ results have improved.

Young second-rower Matty Graydon has re-signed for the club, and Elland prop Shaun Youell is also signing this week, which means Rangers pack looks big again.

“All of a sudden it’s not just a case of turning up and you are guaranteed a shirt,” said PRO Dave Barnes.

“So the big rallying cry is get to training.”

Rangers seconds are in a semi final of the Halifax Cup and quarter final of the Pennine Supplementary Cup where they have drawn Bradford side Queensbury A.

In recent games captain Joe Taphouse and second-rowers Carl Goodiare and Jack Parkinson have been playing out of their skin.

This in turn has inspired other players who have been turning in improved performances, which is proving very pleasing for coach Barsby.
