Old Boys progressed into the last four after seeing off the Halifax AFL leaders in a game of contrasting styles.

Midgley were the quintessential exponents of the long ball game with Brighouse’s style revolving around quick passing and clever movement.

Midgley launched the ball forward at every opportunity and the Old Boys defence of Joe Nelson, Andy Hall, Ian Brock and Matty Roy had to be at their best, covered by Jason Hibbert in goal.

Midgley looked dangerous, especially from corners and long throws-ins.

However, Old Boys’ passing game gradually came to the fore and it was the home team who were causing more danger, Lee Burgess and James Fletcher spearheading the attack.

The second half saw Rob Kenny and Tom Gorringe finding more space on the flanks and began to become more effective. Jimmy Cummings took charge of midfield alsongside Damian Place.

The breakthrough came when Kenny received the ball on the right and curled it into the path of Lee Burgess up front. He brought the ball down, evaded the attentions of a central defender and the keeper and placed the ball into an empty net.

The Old Boys’ cause was helped by one of the Midgley centre backs being giving his marching orders for a foul on Fletcher.

Midgley came back into the game five minutes later when a corner on the left dribbled across the six yard box and lazy defending allowed Midgley to equalise.

Chris Wdowczyk came on for Place and Old Boys promptly went up the other end and scored, once again Kenny the creator, dribbling into the heart of the defence before finding Wdowczyk who sidefooted home.

Mike Pearson then replaced captain Fletcher up front to provide extra pace against the tiring Midgley defenders.

Midgley forced Hibbert to make a couple of saves, however Hall and Brock halted the airborne strategy, allowing the repeated attacks on the Midgley defence.

This pressure finally bore fruit when man of the match Cummings found space in the middle and directed a pinpoint pass through to Pearson on his own up front.

Midgley were not able to match his pace and he adroitly placed the ball into the left hand side of the net past the advancing keeper.

The final substitution saw Calvin Lee replace Gorringe on the left.

Lee was unlucky not to score when, direct from a corner, his shot just skimmed the crossbar.
