MAYBE a mismatch on paper but the Old Boys weren’t underestimating their opponents as the previous

week they had lost a cup tie in a similar situation.

With two enforced changes from last week - Rob Kenny and Calvin Lee away - debutant Lee Burgess started up front with Mike Pearson starting a game after coming back from injury.

From the off it was clear that both teams were determined to play football, on the ground, passing and moving.

However, it was the Brighouse team who had more in their locker, their quicker more educated movement, stoked by

sterling performances from captain James Fletcher and Damian Place in central midfield, allowed Pearson and Burgess to exploit the gaps in the Holmfield defence.

Pearson’s constant running and hassling was threatening to breach the Holmfield defence but it was from Burgess that the opening goal came.

Again, sharp passing in the midfield allowed right midfielder Tom Gorringe time and space to play an accurate through ball to the powerful Burgess. With a swerve of the body he beat the advancing keeper and placed it in the bottom left hand corner of the net.

To Holmfield’s credit they didn’t give up trying to play football, playing out from the back, but kept being caught by the pressing game from the home team. Adding to Brighouse’s attacking potential, the two fullbacks, Andy Burton on the right and Luke Johnson on the left, were raiding

down the flanks and the second came shortly after, a through ball from left midfielder Chris Wdowczyk again finding Burgess in the Holmfield area. Burgess beat one defender and shot for goal, the ball deflecting off a own defender and into the net.

Once again Holmfield responded well and mounted some pacy counter attacks. However, with Ian Brock and Andy Hall winning most of the balls in the air Jason Hibbert goal only had to make one notable save to make.

Brighouse were now roaming freely into the Holmfield half and from one attack Fletcher was brought down just inside the area. Fletcher promptly dispatched the penalty into the left hand side of the Holmfield net for a 3-0 half-time lead.

Holmfield pulled one back after the restart with a powerful shot from outside the area. However, normal service was resumed with Old Boys monopolising possession, catching Holmfield on the break and creating further chances.

Jimmy Cummimgs replaced Wdowczyk on the left, Lee Williams came on for Ian Brock at centre back and Joe Nelson for Mike

Pearson up front.

These changes did the trick especially Cummings onthe left who brought an extra dimension to the game, attacking the

tiring Holmfield defence at will.

It was from one of these attacks that Old Boys sealed their victory.

A free kick on the edge of the box was curled in by Fletcher towards the goal and Burgess ran

into the penalty area, stooped low and headed the ball into the right hand corner for a a deserved hat trick.

Old Boys then played the game out, deserved winner but giving a tough game by the footballing side from Holmfield.
