Nick up for new challenge
NORMALLY happy to compete in the gruelling world of Triathlons, Brighouse-based Nick Hannah was encouraged by his sister-in-law Kate to take part in a a sporting craze sweeping across several countries, writes Charlotte Henbest.
People are queuing up for Tough Mudder - a 12 mile assault course designed by the special forces and featuring electric shocks, fire and mud tunnels in among the 25 obstacles.
Nick, a member of Wakefield Triathlon Club and Kate completed the Tough Mudder competition at Cholmondeley Estate, Cheshire, on November 19.
Before the start both were very nervous and both decided to dress for the weather and conditions rather than go for one of the many fancy dress prizes up for grabs. Some competitors were just in trunks, others in full suits or dresses and some dressed ready for Christmas.
“We all had to make a pledge about it not being a race; it’s a team challenge and to help your fellow tough mudder get to the end. Eye of the Tiger from Rocky started playing and the atmosphere intensified and we were off through some smoke and in to the first obstacle.” said Nick, 36, an IT manager at HSBC.
“It was some easy hay bails at first before jumping in to a crate of ice. It was then up a muddy hill and on to a platform for a 5 foot jump into some water. It was not good for Kate who was not sure about jumping in there in the first place. As she came out of the water she was shivering and hyper-ventilating so fortunately the nearby medical team whisked her away.
“Next up was the Electric Eel, which was netting with electric shock cables hanging down and then through the under water barrels. I was really looking forward to getting my space blanket round me and a well earned beer but I had two obstacles to go, Everest and another electric shock! Everest is a 15 foot black quarter pipe you have to run up and hope your comrades can grab your arms. It took me two attempts and I did my bit at the top to help some of the others up.
“As I crossed the line and received my orange Tough Mudder headband I went to check on Kate. Fortunately she was okay. I was bruised but buzzing from getting through unscathed and in the end I really enjoyed it.”
