Garbe still not happy despite big points lead
BRIGHOUSE Old Boys go into a two week break for cup competitions with a whopping 17 point gap between them and the fourth placed club in Division Two of the West Yorkshire League.
Their 6-3 victory over Swillington kept them eight points clear of the second placed club but manager Phil Garbe has banished all talk about promotion from the dressing room.
He even pulled the players together at Tuesday's training session and told them he was not a happy man at the way they let Swillington Saints just stride through them for the third goal seconds before the final whistle.
"We play for 90 minutes if we are to achieve anything," he barked
"The way they just gave in at 6-2 was not acceptable and let's be fair 6-2 sounds more like a drubbing to send out a message to the other clubs than 6-3 which has people thinking it was a yo-yo game."
One thing that did put a smile on the face of hard taskmaster Garbe was the continued fight back to match fitness of former Brighouse Town and Bramble striker Adie Kelly.
"Adie scored two goals and for the 70 minutes I played him he was class and was just starting to tire as he builds up from the knee injury that caused him problems last term," added the manager.
This Saturday the Old Boys are in the Halifax Cup second round with a home tie against the Premier League side Halifax Irish Centre (1.45).
Garbe is not expecting an easy game and he has been doing his homework. "They have recently won two and drawn two of their last four games and will lift their game for us trying to prove their league is better than ours," he said.
Their second cup exploit next week will be against West Yorkshire Premier Division club Ossett Common Rovers which will give the Old Boys a serious test of how far they have come.
The Old Boys' reserve team travels to Wakefield to play Stanley Utd Reserves (2.15) following their creditable 2-2 draw with Baildon Trinity Athletic Res.
Stanley are fifth in the division and will again test second-placed Old Boys on their home turf.
Their Halifax League Division One side is at home to Siddal Res (2.15) who are one place above second from bottom Old Boys, so it should prove to be an entertaining tussle for the valuable points to climb away from bottom club Salem.
