Brighouse moved into the semi finals of the West Riding County FA Ladies Cup with a workmanlike performance against a tough Ossett team.

Playing their first home game since October 28, Brighouse started slowly as Ossett forced a couple of early corners which were well dealt with by the defence.

Leanne Smith and Lauren Doyle began to take control of the middle of the park and after 10 minutes Brighouse took the lead.

A superb ball from Smith inside the fullback sent Emily Holroyd through on the right of the penalty area. She took it to the byline before squaring the ball to Sarah Hemingway, who tapped home from two yards.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 following good work from Chelsea Jessop and Hemingway resulting in a corner, Charlotte Reid’s inswinging cross sailing over all the heads in the box and into the far corner.

Vanessa Holroyd and Chelsea Jessop both went close before Holroyd latched onto a great through ball from Jessop to calmly fire past the advancing keeper.

Brighouse started the second half well with Holroyd going close and on the 55th minute they finished off the tie.

Some great football ended with Smith finding the in form Hemingway inside the area, and she coolly clipped the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards giving the keeper no chance.

The quality of the game dipped as both teams tired on the heavy pitch, but Brighouse had to defend well and Chloe Abbott came out on top in a good battle with the right winger. Alex Sweeney also did a great job standing in at right back, as did Leanne Webster at centre half.

Ossett scored a fine consolation goal late on with a strike from the edge of the area that gave keeper Amy Monday no chance.

On Sunday, Brighouse travel to third-placed Tingley for what promises to be a very exciting encounter.
