Darren Ferguson deserved more time at Posh
THE sacking of manager Darren Ferguson at Peterborough United is downright appalling.
Two successive promotions and just 15 or so games into the Champion-ship he is given the boot from London Road.
Surely he needed time to settle the squad down to what is a very competitive league. Last season at Doncaster Rovers we found ourselves bottom at this stage of the season but we stuck with Sean O'Driscoll and come Boxing Day we turned things around and accumulated more points in the second half of the season than Wolverhampton who were promoted to the Premiership.
Darren's dad, Sir Alex, was, many of you older end may recall, set for the axe and in the last chance saloon he dug out and where is he now two decades on? We have not heard the last of Darren Ferguson and I saw first hand his side give Doncaster a great game some three weeks ago. They have some talented young players he has brought in and some real quality from the non-league game who will progress right to the top of our game.
MARK Reynolds, a good friend of mine who runs Rawthorpe Amateur Box-ing Club at the Gas Club off Leeds Road, Huddersfield, where quite a few Rastrick and Brighouse-based boxers over the years have learned the trade, has been working over the past week as a minder for Mike Tyson.
Mark, who is also the GMB Union representative for the Professional and Amateur Boxers Association, has been to Doncaster, London, Cardiff, Belfast and Wolverhampton keeping an eye on the former World Heavyweight Champion.
He is seen (above) squaring up to Tyson ahead of the Cardiff promotion.
Next week we should hear from Mark a few things that happened before the big fella left Heathrow for America yesterday afternoon.
ON Sunday afternoon at 2pm Brighouse Rangers Ladies RL team play their first home game at Russell Way against Batley Ladies.
They have not had the best of starts and last week's Division One fixture at New Earswick, York, was postponed. They are hoping for a good touchline crowd to cheer them on for what is normally a 30 minutes each way game.
The girls are pictured here in preparation for the game which they hope will bring their first points of the season, especially with your vocal support.
TALKING of the ladies again and I was delighted to see so many at the Rastrick CC presentation evening. The new team only managed to get two fixtures in with nearby Outlane CC Ladies and I promised club secretary John Edge I would include them to encourage other local clubs to form a ladies team.
John said it could be done through player's wives and partners and younger members of the committee, plus the many mothers whose sons play for the junior and youth teams.
His message is simple: "Come on Brighouse, Lightcliffe, Hartshead and Badger Hill, let us see if over the winter months you can put together a ladies team and then we can enjoy some more fixtures and some good social occasions.
"Our girls loved every minute of their two games and so did the Outlane girls and they would like more fixtures as well."
So there you have it gentlemen. Call in the fairer sex to share that square with you and let them put willow on leather to make it an even more happy and interesting 2010 season.
