Crucial game in promotion chase
BRIGHOUSE Old Boys face another tough game as they push for promotion.
They take on the seventh-placed team in the West Yorkshire Premier Division this Saturday when they visit Old Headingley for the first time (2pm).
With leaders Rothwell FC inactive and wins for Kippax and Robin Hood Athletic above them, it was status quo in the league positions in Division One but all three are now just one point behind the one time runaway leaders.
“They (Rothwell) have two games in hand on us but along with Kippax and Robin Hood they have to play each other and so the pressure is really on for the two promotion places,” said Old Boys manager Phil Garbe.
“Last Saturday’s 1-0 away win at Aberford was a solid performance as the hosts had definitely improved and have some good players there and are fighting with a few more for First Division survival.
“A good bonus point for us last Saturday was the return of Matty Roy after injury and while there was some rustiness there, he came through well and there was no reaction from the knee,” said Garbe.
“Lee Williams is back in the centre of defence and playing well and that has allowed me to push Reece Bray back into midfield where he is a better player so the team is strengthened considerably.
This Saturday’s game is against Old Headingley, who play at the Territorial Army Parachute HQ on the Leeds Road out of Bradford towards Pudsey, and currently are seventh in the table.
“They are having a really good season and at one stage were in the top four and have only been losing by the odd goal when not winning themselves or drawing, so it will be another tough game,” said Garbe.
Old Boys reserve team game at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe HS last Saturday was called off by local referee John Hollis after a mid-morning inspection.
There was snow, ice and surface water on it and he deemed it dangerous.
This Saturday they travel to Boroughbridge (2pm) and a much needed win would take them off the bottom of the Alliance League Division One.
The two teams drew 1-1 at Hipperholme in October.
The club’s Halifax League Division One side put up a great performance against high flying Sowerby Bridge, losing 5 - 3 to two late goals.
On Saturday they are away to Copley club Volunteer Arms who are challenging for promotion and were winners 3-1 at Hipperholme earlier in the season.
Player-manager Rob Moore is confident that if they could just scrape a win it would give his squad confidence to go on a run.
