Crow Nest Park ranked among world's best nine-holers
CROW Nest Park Golf Club, already with a number of accolades to its name, has added the most prestigious yet.
Respected magazine Golf World has ranked the course at Hove Edge as one of the top nine-holers in the world.
It is up there with Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, recently ranked as the best short course in Scotland, and Dunes Club in Michigan, rated ahead of almost 5,000 others by Sports Illustrated magazine as the leading nine-hole course in America.
Golf World editor Chris Jones told Echo Sport that the magazine highlighted Crow Nest Park largely through the positive word-of-mouth from players of all abilities.
"We also have testers who sample the various courses and they came back with a very favourable reaction," said Jones.
The magazine ran a special feature on long-established short course Royal Worlington and Newmarket, Suffolk, and alongside pinpointed what it described as 10 top nine nine-holers in the world.
Others which the magazine describes as "little gems that have remained short and sweet" include Musselburgh Old Course where the Open Championship was born and Glacier Park Lodge, Montana, put on the map and highly rated by Ben Hogan and Bobby Jones.
Crow Nest Park's ranking has delighted the club's general manager, Les Holmes.
"It's great news. To be ranked alongside some of the world's most prestigious courses is fantastic for the club and its loyal membership."
"I am especially pleased for head greenkeeper Rob Gee who has worked hard to ensure the course appeals to players of all abilities."
He said that while many clubs were struggling to hold their membership Crow Nest was bucking the trend.
Recognising that in tough times paying the bills can take priority over golf subs, Crow Nest has introduced a number of incentives over the last 18 months.
These include waiving the joining fee, reducing the annual membership subscription for a five-day member and a further reduction for early payment.
All this has resulted in membership increasing from 247 in November, 2008, to 280 now – and still rising.
"All of these factors and the additional benefit of some great awards, such as this latest accolade, have helped Crow Nest Park increase its numbers against the national trend of falling memberships," said Holmes. "The club is in a good position and can continue to build on its success."
