Brighouse Town's offer is an attractive one for Leeds and Terriers fans on derby day

HATS off to Brighouse Town officials who have invited all Huddersfield Town and Leeds United supporters wanting some more soccer fare on Saturday afternoon to attend their derby game with Emley (3.00).

With the lunchtime kick off for the derby game at the Galpharm Stadium and a finish around 2.15pm, it gives those wishing to see more soccer the opportunity to drive across to Hove Edge.

Fans of both clubs can show their tickets for the game or a club season ticket and get in for half price.

That will set you back 2 for an adult and 1 for a senior citizen or child between five and 16-years-old.

They have a match programme, covered accommodation for 250 and in Dave Wormald's caf you can be sure to get the best hot Bovril in these parts, not to mention many other beverages, food and a wide selection of chocolate biscuits and bars.

They also keep you up to date on their PA system and in all its, as I have been saying for many moons, a well run club.

Town with mopping up the points since December have gone to the top in only their second season in semi-pro football and this town of ours now needs to come out and support them. What is more there are two excellent public houses at the end of St Giles Road, the Old Pond and through the snicket the Dusty Miller, and what's better if you are not driving than a couple of pints after a match and good old natter about the game as the results come flying in from around the country.

I just hope the weather is with Town for the weekend and they do get a record crowd, their enterprise and work deserves it.

My good friend Paul Ramsden of Lightcliffe CC and Old Brods fame who is now the PA announcer for Huddersfield Town, will also be announcing the offer over the airwaves on a couple of occasions which could well do the trick for especially the fans of the winning side.

FOLLOWING that horrendous murder of the Cowcliffe newsagent and shopkeeper last Saturday evening, I am delighted that my good friend Billy Pickup, the Shepherds Rest landlord across from the shop, has commenced with friends raising a reward for information leading to the capture of the four teenagers involved.

Billy is a smashing chap and played in the centre for Huddersfield RLFC and Warrington, and was a class act. Both he and his wife are devastated with what has happened and want the perpetrators caught ASAP.

I KNOW someone who was in the corporate and vice presidents restaurant at Bloomfield Road, home of Blackpool last week, for the visit of Middlesbrough and they were left gobsmacked with the pre-match performance of manager Ian Holloway.

With just 40 minutes to go before kick off he came in and ran through the team, tactics, cracked a few gags as he does, and then after 10 minutes left to rapturous applause.

Tell me how many managers would do that in the Premiership, the Championship or League One for that matter?

None would be the answer and they would send their deputies or the newly entitled band of directors of football. Nothing like the real thing as the Tangerines are proving and they are also doing alright out on the football field.

I'M not name dropping but when I next bump into Match of the Day commentator Tony Gubba at a soccer match I am going to ask him where he learned all about ice skating.

Last season when I sat with him for dinner in the director's lounge at Reading's Madjeski Stadium it never entered my head.

It would do now because he quite impresses me with what he comes out with while commentating on the Dancing On Ice programme on Sunday evenings.

FINALLY, there's a busy weekend ahead for local sport with Brighouse Town FC at home, Brighouse Old Boys FC, Brighouse Rangers ARLFC and the Old Brodleians RFC.

Take a look where they are all placed in their respective tables, it must be something in the local water!
