Almost a barney as ace loses four

RAYMOND Van Barnveveld, the five times world darts champion, played to a packed Low Moor WMC club last Friday night with several parties in from Brighouse and nearby Wyke.

Dutchman Barnevelde, a champion four times with the BDO and once with the PDC, and sponsored by The Money Shop, was appearing in front of around 300 darts enthusiasts on the back of taking the Sky Sports televised Grand Slam in Wolverhampton and the £100,000 purse that went with it.

He defeated his fellow countryman Michal Van Gerwin 16-14 in the final.

At Low Moor Barnvelde played 16 players at 501 up one leg and in two sessions of eight he lost four games in total.

Karl Nixon from Brighouse, son of Henry who had organised a party of 16 along with a 12-strong party from the Commercial and Railway Inn, Gooder Lane, played 13th man.

His father said he was unlucky not to win his leg and make it five defeats for the top professional arrow thrower.

“Karl had two darts at double eight to take Barnevelde’s scalp after scoring 45, 125, 140, 41, 77 and 65, leaving just eight,” he said.

Barnevelde wasn’t up for signing autographs other than on his own pictures at £5 a time and Henry said that promoter Dave Ryan copped for some flak at the end when Barnevelde slipped away, also not wanting to have his photograph taken with his army of fans.
