Late runs proved to be crucial

BRIGHOUSE suffered a 57-run defeat to Spen Victoria.

Spen Victoria won the toss and elected to bat.

They lost the first wicket of Rushworth to Adam Brown with the score on 22.

A patient 54 then followed by Tom Baker to take the score to 96 before Will Smith clean bowled him.

Former Brighouse batsman Matt Senior plundered 43 before a mid-innings collapse threatened to wreck Spen’s hopes of posting a challenging score. However, Joel Pollard (31 no) and Rob Burton (30) added valuable late runs.

Will Smith was the pick of the Brighouse bowlers with three for 40 as Spen reached a total of 192 for eight.

A gutsy 38 from skipper Chris Maloney gave Brighouse hope but they were undone by Burton (four for 37) and Craig Woodhead (four for 40) to finish on 135 all out.
