Brighouse Town Reserves carried on their impressive form in the East Lancashire League, winning every game except one draw, when beating Ossett Town 5-0 away on Saturday.

The most impressive stat was the average age of the squad being just 19, with only two players over 21. A signal of Brighouse Town’s brilliant youth policy.

The game started with neither team taking control early on with a lot of the ball in the midfield but nobody creating any chances.

Town were the ones to step it up, however with some quick inter-play in the midfield it released Joe Thornton on the left who’s impressive pace beat the Ossett right back but his cross was unable to find Tolley in the middle.

Brighouse kept this tempo up and got their break through on 20 minutes through Joe Thornton after a top class volleyed diagonal through ball by Matty Waller.

Thornton drove in straight to goal and finished confidently across the keeper. From the re-start Brighouse pressed well to stop Ossett getting into the game.

The lads started gaining more and more confidence with the ball, zipping it around the whole pitch and creating great chances through Farrell and Thornton but unfortunately the finish was lacking.

The whistle went and Brighouse went in 1-0 up but in reality it could have been five!

The lads returned for the second half after an extremely positive team talk which seemed to have worked as six minutes into the half Brighouse scored again through Ryan Farrell after brilliant perseverance, strength and determination by Will Tolley to win the ball high up the pitch, then having the vision to square it to Farrell who made no mistake smashing it home.

Ossett responded well to this and started keeping the ball well and they got some joy when they could have and probably should have scored from sixyards but were thwarted by some determined defending.

In order to withstand the attacks from Ossett fresh legs were needed and on 62 minutes Luke Hill was introduced closely followed by Isaac Baldwin on 68 minutes. takin the stage.

On 75 minutes the promising Angus Hastings got the last touch from a Matty Waller ball and some excellent wing play from Thornton.

A minute later it was 4-0 when Tolley scored a mandatory goal at the second attempt after the keeper parried his first shot, again after good wing play by Thornton.

Then on 77 minutes when Isaac Baldwin broke into the area and picked out Luke Hill at the back post it was 5-0. What a three minute spell and arguably it was harsh on Ossett as they were getting back into the game. However 5-0 did not flatter Brighouse at all as they were mighty impressive all afternoon.
