Bridge Balti Halifax Sunday League Division Two leaders Top Club bounced back with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Hebden Bridge at Lane Head.
It was Bridge who started the brighter, creating a number of chances but they found the Rastrick side’s ‘keeper and man of the match Chris Lawton in fine form.
As the first half progressed Top Club started to grow into the game with right winger Dan McCloud causing the Hebden defence all sorts of problems.
He got his reward when he was played in by Gary Nicholson and confidently rolled the ball past the goalkeeper to give his side a slender interval advantage.
The visitors continued to look lively and levelled from the penalty spot early in the second half.
It was the home side’s inspired substitutions that ultimately helped them gain the three points.
The recently returned Ryan Collins was creating chances up top, but it was the introduction of Dan Thaxter that proved the most pivotal.
He stole the show for the Rastrick side with a bullet header at the back post from a Ryan Barkham cross with five minutes left.
That gave his side the edge as they saw out a tricky tie with some stoic late defending.
The results leave Top Club at the pinnacle of the table on 37 points, with the two most likely challengers locked on 33 points apiece. The Rastrick side have a game in hand on North Bridge and two on Hens Face.
In Division One, Rastrick Bowling Club suffered their eighth defeat on the spin away to fourth-placed Greetland Goldstars.
The 4-1 reversal has left the local side struggling on nine points and in the relegation zone. Their last victory came in early November.
In the same division Old Pond saw their encounter with Royd Club postponed, whilst FC Barge’s match scheduled for The Dual Seal Stadium against Waiters Arms also fell victim to the boggy conditions.
