Matthews strikes twice as Town return to winning ways

Town erased the memory of their setback against Heanor as they notched up another home win last Saturday.

The first real attempt for Town came after 20 minutes when Ryan Hall put in a cross for Tom Matthews but his shot went wide.

Two minutes later Luke Gibson weaved 20 yards before seeing his shot kicked off the line. He then had another quick attempt but keeper Tom Gutteridge cleared the danger.

In the 26th minute, Ernest Boafo made a great attempt after receiving the ball from Gibson but his shot was carried wide by the blustery wind.

Town continued to dominate and Joe Mitchell passed back to Hall but the ‘keeper made the save.

In the 36th minute, the Derbyshire side had their first real chance when they were awarded a free kick. Ross Parker fired the ball towards goal and team mate Shaun Rickford headed wide.

On 40 minutes, Town finally got their goal following a superb cross from Ben Thornton. Matthews locked onto the ball and fired home.

Town made a half time substitution with Joe Thornton replacing Gibson and a minute in Danny Naidole set up Matthews for his second.

Naidole’ made it 3-0 and after Town were denied a penalty when Matthews was brought down in the area, Ben Thornton crossed for Boafo whose volley was saved by Gutteridge.

Ben Small was introduced for the first time since his bad head injury against Nostell, replacing Naidole.

Two minutes later Thornton aimed a shot at goal but Gutteridge made a great save.

In the 75th minute, Richard Roberts punched Matt Savage’s shot over the bar before Joe Thornton sent a superb ball into the middle for Hall who se effort went over the crossbar.

A minute later and central defender Nick Jaggar was replaced by Adam Wilson.

With five minutes to go Long Eaton finally put one past Roberts, Gerome Palmer heading in from a corner.

It looked like Town might score again late on when Adam Wilson put in a cross and Matthews ran onto it but Gutteridge saved the attempt.
