BRIGHOUSE Ladies were knocked out of the County Cup by Wakefield, losing 3-2, but not without putting up a tremendous fight which culminated in a nail biting finish.
Wakefield srarted the game strongly, which wasn’t suprising as they are three divisions above Brighouse, but the back four of Leanne Webster, Chloe Abbott, Sheridan Drake and Charlotte Reid dealt with anything thrown at them. As the half wore on Brighouse grew in confidence and Vanessa Holroyd fired wide after being set up by Sarah Hemingway. Then Hemingway fired wide from the edge of the area.
The midfield of Emily Holroyd, Alex Sweeney, Leanne Smith and Lauren Doyle were all working hard as well as playing some great football, but against the run of play Wakefield took the lead after 30 minutes with a great strike from the edge of the area. This spurred the home side on and the Brighouse keeper pulled off a smart double save to keep it at 1-0 going into the break.
The second half started at breakneck speed with no quarter given by either side and chances created at both ends, but after 61minutes Wakefield went 2-0 up after great work from their winger who beat two defenders before firing into the bottom corner. And five minutes later Brighouse gave away a soft free kick which was fired into the bottom corner, making it 3-0 and seemingly game over.
However, Brighouse kept playing their own game and on the 75th minute pulled a goal back; Webster knocked the ball down the channel, Holroyd held the ball up before laying it inside to Sarah Hemingway who smashed a superb left footer into the top corner from twenty five yards. Three minutes later Brighouse were right back in the game after good pressure down the right. Lauren Doyle intercepted a clearance before slotting home from 12 yards. This goal set up a frantic last ten minutes, as Brighouse poured forward, and in the last minute Doyle broke through only to see her shot superbly saved by the keeper who quickly recovered to block Holroyd’s follow up to allow Wakefield to progress into the next round of the County Cup.
Both teams deserve credit for an entertaining game of football played in the right spirit throughout. On Sunday Brighouse entertain Ossett Albion at Hipperholme & Lightcliffe High School (1:30).
